Identity

The Grove is a micro-retreat center, intentional community and 'living laboratory' where people from all faith traditions are welcomed to show up as their authentic selves. Here, we are all students and teachers at once, practicing the art of shared power and collaborative leadership. By teaching what we learn through our own experience, we hope to inspire a more connected, equitable, and compassionate way of being in our families, workplaces and communities.

Vision

We envision a world where the way we live together becomes a meaningful contribution to peace. We believe that when people have the courage to stay present through breakdowns and the skills to share power, the cycles of isolation and loneliness can be transformed — opening the way for true interdependence and collective flourishing.

Mission

Our mission is to provide educational retreats, workshops, and experiential learning opportunities that equip individuals and groups with practical tools for healthy relationships, conflict transformation, change management, and collaborative leadership.

Values

Everyone Belongs

All have value simply because they exist. All have a piece of the truth and none of us have all of the truth. We believe all can thrive when we are known, accepted, loved and experience a sense of belonging.

People First

We value our relational connections above all else by keeping our attention fully present in each interaction and by listening "for" as opposed to "against". In other words, we listen for reasons to support, encourage, empathize, or empower as opposed to listening for reasons not to support, encourage, empathize, or empower.

Loving Kindness

We practice walking in harmony, releasing our judgments, and choosing the kindest thought towards ourselves and others.

Honest, Kind, and Direct Communication

We practice acknowledging and accepting what is in the current situation with the people directly involved, so that the full range of possibilities are available. In addition we practice seeking clarity and resolution with others when difficulties arise.

Freedom to Be You

We practice sharing all of who we are with each other in honor and respect so that diversity is cherished and thrives.

  1. The mission statement doesn't say anything about our community. Proposed edit:
Our mission is to sustain an intentional community and educational retreat center where we practice and teach the art of living authentically together in unity. We facilitate retreats, workshops, programs, and courses that help people navigate change and breakdowns by staying present and sharing power with one another building resilient and flourishing communities.
    New vision statement:
"We envision a world where the way we live together is our greatest contribution to peace. We do this because we believe that when people have the courage to stay present through breakdowns and the skills to share power, the cycle of isolation and loneliness are broken—paving the way for a future of true interdependence and collective flourishing."

    1. For Vision Statement, what about:
Our mission is to sustain an intentional community and educational retreat center where we practice and teach the art of living authentically together in unity. We provide public workshops, retreats, courses, and experiential learning programs in conscious communication, conflict transformation, shared-power leadership, and contemplative practices.
Our purpose is to equip individuals and groups with practical tools to navigate change, remain present through breakdowns, reduce social tension, and build resilient, flourishing communities.

    2. Oops that first note is for the Mission Statement. This not is for the Vision Statement ... what about:
We envision a world where the way we live together becomes a meaningful contribution to peace. We believe that when people have the courage to stay present through breakdowns and the skills to share power, the cycles of isolation and loneliness can be transformed—opening the way for true interdependence and collective flourishing.
As a regional center for life-skills education, we demonstrate through our onsite programs and community laboratory how peaceful, collaborative living can be learned, practiced, and shared.

    3. Alternate Vision Statement:
"We envision a world where the way we live together becomes a primary contribution to global peace. By operating as a premier regional center for life-skills education and a residential laboratory, we demonstrate how emotional intelligence and shared power can break the cycles of isolation and conflict. Our goal is to model and teach a future of true interdependence, equipping the public with the courage and communication skills necessary for collective flourishing."

    4. Alternate Mission Statement:
"The mission of The Grove is to operate an intentional community and residential laboratory dedicated to the study, practice, and dissemination of interpersonal harmony. By modeling these practices in our daily life, we equip individuals and groups with the skills to navigate change, transform conflict, and build resilient, flourishing communities."

  2. Suggested edits to Identity:
We are an intentional community and educational laboratory dedicated to the practice of shared power. We bring together inquisitive minds and deep souls from all traditions to move beyond "power over" dynamics, instead cultivating a culture of interdependence, collaborative leadership, and experiential learning. Through our life as a community and our work as a retreat center, we model and teach the skills necessary to share ideas, navigate change and conflict, and thrive in connection.

  3. Proposed Changes to "Values":
    Our Core Educational Values
At The Grove, our values serve as the foundational curriculum for our residential laboratory and public programs:

Inclusive Belonging: We study and model environments where all individuals are recognized for their inherent worth, facilitating programs that bridge social divides.

Relational Presence: We prioritize deep, empathic listening as a core competency, teaching participants to listen "for" potential and connection rather than "against" opposition.

Practical Kindness: We practice and teach the discipline of choosing non-judgmental thought and action as a tool for reducing social tension.

Integrity in Communication: We utilize direct, kind, and honest dialogue to navigate conflict, providing a roadmap for others to achieve clarity and resolution in their own communities.

Authentic Diversity: We champion the freedom of individual expression, believing that true collective flourishing requires the active honoring of diverse perspectives.
