From time to time, disagreements or conflicts may arise between community members. Interpersonal conflict is an integral part of the human experience and as such, the occurance of these conflicts shall not be seen as a failure of the involved parties, the community or its values. Instead, conflicts and disagreements shall be taken as "opportunities" for personal reflection.
Interpersonal Process
- Approach the person or people with whom you have an issue and ask if this is a good time to have a discussion. If it is not a good time, work out a time to discuss the matter.
- Continue the discussions until the issue is resolved or it becomes clear the the issue cannot be resolved without help.
- If the issue cannot be resolved, agree on a 3rd party to act as a moderator.
- If the third party agrees to act as moderator, continue discussions with the moderator present until the issue is resolved or it becomes clear that the issue cannot be resolved with the current moderator.
- If the issue cannot be resolved with the current moderator, either nominate another moderator or take up the issue with the Vision Council.
Vision Council Process
- Place the issue on the agenda for an upcomming meeting. The meeting may be a normal business meeting or it may be a special meeting called just for this purpose. Provide any data that may help with the discussion.
- At the first meeting in which the issue is being discussed, simply ask clarifying questions about the issue. Do not express opinions and do not engage in discussion. This is an important time in which to understand exactly what the issue is and to make sure you have all the important information.
- At the second meeting, engage in a full discussion but do not make any judgements or decisions. This meeting can get quite emotional and the process of discussion does not always provide enough clarity in the moment to make a wise judgement or decision. Spend the time until the next meeting reflecting on the discussion and having any necessary conversations.
- At the third meeting, if a shared sense of a judgement or decision can be worked out among those present, record it and create a process for enforcing it. If there is not a shared sense, continue the discussion at subsequent meetings until a shared sense arises within the group.
