A Resident Member is a community member whose primary residence is located within the physical boundaries of the community.
Resident Member Acceptance Process
Approximate duration: 6 months
- Attend our weekly Vision Meetings for 5 months
- Participate in community gatherings and projects
- After 5 months, request to join the community
- Wait for the community decision
- Climb Aboard
Attend Weekly Meetings
You (or your significant other) must attend our weekly meetings. You may participate online or in person. Once you are on our email list, you will be sent a link in advance to join the meeting online. If you miss three meetings in a row, your acceptance process resets and you will need another six months to complete the process.
Participate in Gatherings
From time to time we may host community projects, potlucks, gatherings or work days. You must participate in these gatherings. This is another way to get to know you and determine how well you might integrate into our community. If you miss three gatherings in a row, your membership process resets and you will need another six months to complete the process.
Request to Join
After FIVE months have passed, during the weekly community meeting, you may formally request to join the community as a resident. Please let us know of your intention a few days before the meeting so we can put it on the agenda. During the meeting in which you request to be a resident member, we may ask you questions about anything we are unclear about, such as your motivation for joining the community or your ability to meet the financial obligations of membership etc., but we will not enter into a discussion about accepting you into the community.
The Decision Process
Duration: minimum of 2 weeks
Prospective member attendance is required
Week One
During the next weekly community meeting, we will enter into a robust discussion about accepting you into the community. During this discussion you may hear perspectives or opinions that make you uncomfortable. We strive to be kind, but accepting a new resident member has the potential to profoundly affect the dynamics of the community, so frank, open and honest discussion is encouraged. After this discussion, no decision will be made. We will reflect on the discussion for a week, until the next meeting.
Week Two
During the following meeting, if all our questions and concerns have been addressed, we will most likely make a decision. However, if any Resident Member still has questions or concerns, we may continue the discussion without making a decision.
Ongoing
This process continues each week at the community meeting until either a decision is made, you withdraw your intention to join the community, or you are absent from the meeting.
If you know in advance that you cannot make a particular meeting once you have submitted your request to join, you may notify the Outreach Team and explain your circumstances. The Outreach Team will notify the community and provide a recommendation about whether to put your process on pause. At the next meeting, we will discuss the situation and make an assessment. If the assessment is positive, we will reschedule your acceptance meeting(s) and you may continue the process.
Onboarding
Once the Vision Circle has accepted you into the community, you must:
- Read aloud and affirm a vow to the Membership Commitments in a meeting of the Vision Circle
- Sign any legal documents that may be required
- Complete any onboarding process required by the Outreach Team
